Famous places to eat the best Biryani in Hyderabad

Say the word “Biryani” loudly enough anywhere in Hyderabad, and you’re likely to get one of two reactions: either ears perk up and mouths water, or a heated debate breaks out over which restaurant serves the best. While this aromatic dish originated in West Asia, Hyderabad adopted it and made it their own aeons ago.

While the concept of ‘types’ is often limited to ‘chicken/mutton/vegetarian,’ there are a plethora of biryani variations, each made with a different painstaking method. Zafrani, which is saffron-colored and heavily spiced, can be found anywhere from five-star hotels to street cafes. Sofiyani, which is milder and lighter on the stomach, is also known as safaida (because it is white). The recipe is a closely guarded family secret known only to a few elderly Hyderabadi families. More than ten different types of biryani have also emerged from Telugu kitchens in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, including Ulavacharu biryani (made with horse gramme), Gongura biryani (made with the tart gongura leaf and jackfruit), and jackfruit biryani.

Paradise Biryani:

What began in 1953 as a small canteen in a theatre is now almost synonymous with Hyderabadi culture. While Paradise is often rejected as a Hyderabadi puffed-up cliché, the truth is that its Hyderabadi really is good. Their mutton biryani is the one to order here, made with fragrant Daawat Basmati rice (not a plug–the sign is plastered across the entrance). Under the long-grained rice, generous chunks of fall-off-the-bone meat are barely hidden. The Dahi ki chutney served with it is a welcome accompaniment, as it is slightly spicy. This is followed by a plate of the restaurant’s other star dish, crispy Golden Fried Prawns.

Hotel Shadab:

From the outside, Hotel Shadab appears to be crammed somewhere in the impossibly crowded streets of Charminar’s Ghani Bazaar. However, if you can get past the grimy walls and slightly sticky tabletops, you’ll be rewarded with the kind of delectable biryani that could make a grown man cry tears of joy. It’s served in a copper pot overflowing with fragrant brown rice and topped with a gleaming boiled egg that sits atop the heaped mound with style. Shadab is one of the few restaurants in town where the chicken biryani is on par with, if not better than, the mutton biryani.

Bawarchi Restaurant:

The mutton biryani at Bawarchi is so popular that imposters have sprouted up all over the city, hoping to ride its coattails to success. But don’t be deceived–the OG has no branches and makes this abundantly clear! Bawarchi takes its biryani seriously and expects you to do the same. It’s simple, unfussy, and has a no-nonsense attitude about its food. Prepare to eat heaping plates of the stuff, along with the accompanying condiments, and be prepared to loosen your belt. If you have room, try their famous Tandoori Chicken.

Cafe Bahar:

Cafe Bahar is one of Hyderabad’s most popular haleem and biryani restaurants. If you ask me where you can usually sit with your friends for dinner or biryani, I’ll say Cafe Bahar. This restaurant provides a fantastic taste with authentic spices and the traditional feel of Hyderabadi food. Prices are very reasonable, and you can visit this location several times per month without breaking the bank. Fish Biryani and Chicken Mutton Biryani are two of Cafe Bahar’s most popular dishes, so if you go, don’t forget to try them.

Nayaab Hotel:

Omar Aziz, whose family owns and manages this Hyderabad institution, led me backstage to the high-energy kitchen, where large tea filters continue to brew their signature tea, and to their biryani section, where biryani-cooks work their magic in large handis. The restaurant’s paya, which is served with a unique bread called chaar koni naan, is a popular dish, as is the biryani, which never disappoints.

Shah Ghouse:

During Ramadan, this restaurant draws large crowds for its legendary Haleem. Proud Hyderabadis will tell you that the city’s haleem – the traditional Ramadan porridge made with pounded meat, broken wheat, barley, and lentils – is the best in India. Shah Ghouse is not only well known for its biryani, but it is also a year-round popular stop (with four locations) for its delicious and flavorful Hyderabad biryani.
